Training Timetable

The current training timetable (with effect from 1st October 2009) can be downloaded here.

Squad and Membership Fees

Squad fees must be paid by monthly standing order from your bank. Details of the fees for each squad can be viewed lower down the page.

It is the duty of the Parent/guardian to ensure that the correct fees are being paid in accordance with the schedule below. When changes are made to monthly fees notices will be included in Newsflyers and/or hand-outs from Class managers. Checks are made on standing order arrangements on a regular basis, but to avoid any embarrassment or difficulties we ask that all members are vigilant in their own checking procedures.

It is essential that the Swimmers Name in the Reference Section is included on the form to ease the checking procedures and to help further, it would be preferred if the squad name was included in this Reference, ie “Mary Smith D3”

The Club also charges a membership fee of £30.00 which is payable on joining the Club and each January thereafter.

The Governing Body of Welsh Swimming is called Swim Wales (formerly known as the Welsh Amateur Swimming Association – WASA). All Welsh Clubs have to be affiliated to Swim Wales, to enable them to operate and compete at home and abroad. In accordance with the rules of membership of Swim Wales, we are required to have every swimmer, coach and official to be formally registered as a member of Swim Wales, which also includes an insurance cover. The Club pays this on your behalf as part of the Squad Fees.

Class Managers

Each squad has one (or maybe two) class managers. These are parents of children in the squad, and they will take the register for the class at training, pass out information and act as a point of contact for queries within the squad. Contact details for the class managers can be viewed lower down the page. You will need to log in first.

Session Attendance

City of Cardiff Swimming Club appreciates that swimmers have other lives and that school work is important. Schoolwork must come first but it is our opinion that with planning – both can work alongside each other. A fit body helps a fit mind and City of Cardiff swimmers have in general – always performed well at school. If a swimmer cannot attend training for any reason please let the coach or class manager know.

Parents - please ensure that your Squad Coach has arrived at each of your Training Sessions before you leave your child. There have been previous instances where children as young as 7 years old have been left alone with no means of contacting their parents, which can be very upsetting to the child and potentially very dangerous.

Cancelled Sessions - Club Policy.

In the event of a 'designated squad coach' not turning up or being late, swimmers are to change and go home after waiting 15minutes on poolside. Swimmers should NOT enter the water at any time even if there is a lifeguard present. This is in line with our risk assessments and child protection policies.

Parents should ensure at every session that the designated squad coach has turned up before leaving their swimmer at the pool.  It is not the responsibility of the leisure centre, swimming pool, class manager or other parents to look after swimmers should a training session have to be cancelled.

Bullying

Bullying of any sort – verbal or physical will not be tolerated at City of Cardiff Swimming Club and will be treated as a serious breach of discipline with the penalties described in the main section on discipline in this information pack. You are part of a team and you will be expected to show tolerance to other members.

Squad Movement Criteria

The criteria for squad movement has been set by the Professional Coaching Staff, (which will be continually reviewed and subject to change). The standards and targets do not mean automatic movement when gained by a swimmer; they are merely the targets required to be achieved by the swimmer to be considered for movement. Squad moves in the higher squads will also be based on the ability to train within a squad, positive attitude, training regularly and competing in recognised club competitions.

Please Note:

All WASA Qualifying and Consideration times will apply to a swimmers age during that year. When the following years times have been published these will then apply.

Which Meets?
There has been some confusion regarding which meets Development Squad swimmers should be entering.

Development squad swimmers should be targeting Level 3 & 4 meets with the occasional Level 2 meet.  This is so that swimmers are competing at a suitable standard and level in accordance to their present ability and training programme.  This level of  meet will also allow D squad swimmers to reach finals and possibly win medals, which is a great boost to their confidence and over all development before moving up to the higher level meets in the future.

In recent years the club has grown in its membership and it is not always possible or practical for the whole club to attend the same meets.  The club fully understands that some families have siblings in different squads and it is not always practical to have children swimming in different meets on different weekends as this has an impact on family time, if you have this problem please contact Nikki and she will be happy to offer some advice.

The following meets over the next four months are the ones Nikki would like to recommend swimmers in the D squads enter should they have the necessary qualifying times.  These meets have been planned so that swimmers have the opportunity to rest between meets, as over competing can hinder the development of a young swimmer.
  • Tiger Bay Level 3
  • Avalon Level 2/3
  • SE Regional Development Meet L4
  • Gloucester Open Level 3
  • Cardiff Bay Sprint meet Level 3

The current fixture list shows you which coach is going to which meet in the right hand colum, NT = Nikki Thompson / OW = Oliver Williams / DH = Dave Haller, this is intended to be  a guideline for parents as to which squads  meets are aimed at and which squad coach will be attending the meet.

Training With Squads Other Than Your Own

Effective 1st October 2008:

  • Swimmers will not be permitted to train with another squad of a higher level, should they be unable to attend a training session with their own squad, due to any external circumstances.
  • In exceptional circumstances only, and at the request of the professional coaches will swimmers be permitted to occasionally train with another squad of a lower level.
  • Professional coaches will still retain the ability to move or trial swimmers between lanes/classes as part of the swimmers development (e.g. swimmers in NPC & Youth may occasionally switch lanes during a training session to obtain guidance from Dave Haller or the Youth Coach as part of the swimmers development).

Please ensure you adhere to this communication, as failure could result in a swimmer being refused entry to a training session, an embarrassing situation for both swimmer and coach.

This policy has been in place for many years, but not fully enforced as many squads have not been full and coaches have tried to accommodate reasonable requests from swimmer and parents.

Now that most squads are full, and to ensure we continue to offer the highest standard service to all fee payers and provide all swimmers with the opportunity to reach their full potential, we need to re-enforce this policy.

We will continue to review this policy and make further changes if necessary to ensure swimmers are given the best opportunity.
